A snoring mouthpiece is also known as a "mandibular advancement splint". It is intended to stop snoring by positioning the bottom jaw slightly forward. The mouthpiece keeps the tongue forward and so stops the upper airway from narrowing too much. This device can reduce snoring as well as in mild to moderate cases of sleep apnea. Your doctor can give you a referral for a special dentist who makes and fits them, if necessary.

Over-the-counter mouthpieces can offer the same improvements if fitted well. They look like the protective mouthguards that sports players wear. Professionally-fitted mouthpieces are better at positioning the jaw correctly; however, they cost more than over-the-counter mouthpieces. It can be painful if the jaw is too far forward, and won't necessarily reduce snoring. Professionally-fitted devices can usually have the jaw position changed after fitting. Over-the-counter devices usually need to be heated and remolded to re-position them. You can buy these at pharmacies or through the Internet.

In the USA, these devices are considered class 2 medical devices and cannot be sold without a prescription. U.S. residents can, however, import one for personal use.
