Memory Foam
Memory foam products have become extremely popular and diverse since its introduction into commercial markets in the 1980s after initially being NASA tempur foam. Technically known as polyurethane, it was adapted for greater viscosity (fluid thickness) and density through the addition of chemicals. It is sometimes referred to as visco-elastic polyurethane foam. The foam molds in response to body heat and to the shape of a body pressing against it and returns to its original shape after the pressure is removed. Memory foam was developed in 1966 for NASA to improve the safety of aircraft seating. The heat-sensitive foam was initially called "temper foam" by one of its developers, Charles Yost. Yost went on to commercialise the foam with NASA and it was used in medical beds and sports helmets. NASA released it to the public in the early 1980s and used by the mattress and cushion company, Tempur World. Subsequently, the material was used in medical settings as it helped to relieve bed pressure for bony bed-ridden patients. Over the years, the price has come down and NASA memory foam was used for many common household purposes such as mattresses, pillows and mattress toppers. It continues to be used for medical products such as wheelchair seats, hospital pillows and padding. MattressesVisco-elastic mattresses are usually denser than other foam mattresses making them heavier and more supportive. The firmness of the foam determines how comfortable it will be. Some new foams emit an unpleasant odor but this should decrease with airing and a little time. Toppers and padsYou don't need to buy a whole mattress to get the benefit of this product. A topper can be placed over an innerspring mattress to give comfort. See these memory foam mattress topper reviews for the best products. PillowsMemory foam pillows come in great varieties depending on the brand and the design, including body pillows, head pillows and travel pillows. SlippersThe use of visco elastic foam has expanded into a wider range of products where comfort is valued. Memory foam slippers are becoming more and more popular as a product we expect to be soft and comfortable for relaxing at home. Dog beddingAnother product expansion has been to give our best friend comfort too. A memory foam dog bed can be ideal for an arthritic or elderly dog. |
