Health Effects of Caffeine

Passionate coffee drinkers know how good caffeine makes them feel, but what about the negative effects of caffeine? How does the caffeine in coffee really affect you and what are caffeine side effects?

Caffeine is absorbed quickly into the bloodstream and reaches full concentration within an hour of consumption. The effects of caffeine are generally to increase our metabolism by about 10%. Women metabolise caffeine faster than men, but women who take "the pill" take twice as long as other women to metabolise caffeine.

What's your caffeine personality?

Australian research suggests that caffeine consumption could be linked to personality differences, mood and whether you are a "night-owl" or a "lark" (to find out which one you are, take the test on our insomnia quiz page).

Night-owls are extreme evening people who find it hard to get up in the morning. They tend to drink a lot of strong coffee to wake themselves up - they may suffer from caffeine withdrawal). Night owls scored higher on extraversion and impulsivity and may use caffeine to keep their body clock rhythms regular.

Larks are extreme morning people and are less extraverted and impulsive than night owls. The study found that if they had caffeine after about 10am, their mood went down significantly.

We all have different sensitivity levels to the health effects of caffeine, but too much can cause negative effects. Some signs of excessive caffeine consumption are:

  • Dizziness and headaches
  • Need to urinate frequently
  • Dehydration
  • Restlessness
  • High blood pressure
  • Heart palpitations or rapid heart beat
  • Higher body temperature
  • Fatigue, after the energy burst
  • Sleeplessness
  • Irritability
  • Anxiety
  • Trembling hands

Caffeine side effects

Diuretic

This means that caffeine makes you urinate more than you normally would. This is understood to be caused by greater bloodflow to the kidneys.

Insomnia

Too much caffeine can make you take longer to get to sleep and make you sleep for a shorter time. It doesn't change the normal stages of sleep, however.

Tremors

Some people get heart palpitations and trembling hands - this is due to over-activation of the body's nervous system.

Fertility

A US report showed that women who drink more than one cup of coffee per day are half as likely to conceive a child than those who drink less than one cup a day. The caffeine in coffee can be strong.
