Sleep Number Beds

Instead of springs, Sleep Number Beds, also known as the Select Comfort Sleep 5000, uses inflatable air cavities, that allow individual adjustment of each side of the bed using a remote control. Each person can adjust their side of the bed to suit themselves, which is great if one partner likes a firmer mattress than the other. You must do an in-store test before buying this sort of bed. It is recommended that you compare it with Tempur Pedic mattresses to determine which you find more comfortable. If you want to save money, consider a conventional innerspring mattress like the Simmons Beautyrest mattresses be a better option.

You can test a Select Comfort bed for 30 days. If you are not happy with it, you can pay the freight costs or have the company manage the return for $200. The beds come with a 20-year limited warranty.

Choosing a mattress is entirely personal and individual, so you really need to make your own judgement by trying them in-store, however, some Consumer Reports reviewers loved its support, while many found it hard to set the bed to a comfortable level. One reviewer found that the different comfort settings made the bed feel as if it was hilly. Six of eight reviewers who tested the beds for a month said they would only buy the plusher pillowtop model, known as the 5000, finding the basic model too uncomfortable.

Estimated price - $2100 Queen size.
